In Marguerite Gachet at the Piano, Vincent van Gogh employs a combination of brush strokes -- long free strokes on the piano, Neo-Impressionist dabs on the wall, thick repetitive strokes on her gown -- to create a decorative surface, as if sculpted in impasto.
