Aries Compatibility in Love, Work and Friendship

The Zodiac concept of synastry is how we look at astrological compatibility between people and even events! When you talk about astro match-making, you're talking about synastry. It looks at two charts together.

The best way to see compatibility (including a love match) is to have the birth chart of each person (to do this, you'll need your birth date, time and location). In astrology, we look at houses, degrees, and the placement of planets (like Mars and Venus) to see how they work with other planets and aspects in a partner's chart.

"Sun signs alone do not give enough detail on how the entire relationship will work," says astrologer Allie Campbell. As a professional, she'd check the ascendant sign first, which is based on the exact time of your birth. "I'd also look at their personal planets, like the moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars," in addition to many other placements. "There's a lot to consider!"

To cut to the chase, astrological compatibility is not just about your sun sign.

Aries is a fire sign, just like Sagittarius and Leo. When two Aries come together, or one Aries with Sagittarius or Leo, the two fire signs form a harmonious duo. Simply put, fire signs play well together. (Sagittarius-Aires and Leo-Aires are good pairings.) Fire also plays well with air signs (Aquarius, Gemini, Libra); these are the two yang-type (active) elements in astrology.

This simple concept of elements allows you to better understand general compatibility. "You can already deduce that the fellow fire signs (especially Sagittarius) and air signs inherently desire the same things as Aries," says Aganza.

This doesn't mean that Aries natives won't get along with the other signs — earth signs (Virgo, Taurus, Capricorn), or water signs (Pisces, Scorpio, Cancer) — it depends on other aspects in the charts. Earth and water signs are considered the yin-types (or passive elements) in astrology.

Cardinal signs like Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn are considered the visionaries and trend-setters of the zodiac as they initiate the beginning of each of the four seasons.  Cancer-Aries is a pairing of two cardinal signs, which means that they're always the first to come to a social event. Both love to initiate.

So, are you an Aries? Even if you weren't born in late March or early April, you still have Aries somewhere in your chart.

"When it comes to Aries compatibility, it's important to know that this sign can be the classic bachelor or bachelorette of the zodiac," says Aganza. "But it doesn't mean they can't commit." You're in for a lot of excitement with the supercharged first sign of the zodiac.

An Aries in love needs a partner "who is equally independent as they are and has the same amount of energy to keep up," says Campbell. This is true regardless of your own zodiac sign. "With that in mind, in my opinion, the two best matches for Aries would be Aquarius and Libra," says Campbell.

"These two air signs have qualities that are very complementary to the Aries personality and motivations; Aquarius is very independent, but still appreciates company and having fun together," explains Campbell. With an Aquarian, Aries has somebody they can rely on, but who isn't clingy. "[The Aquarius is comfortable] doing their own thing," she says. "The mental stimulation between the both of them would be electrifying!"

 On the opposite side of the zodiac wheel to Aries, you'll find another excellent match: Libra (opposites attract)! "These cosmic opposites are giving yin-yang energy," says Campbell. "The Aries can show Libra how to step into their own power, while Libra can show Aries that it's OK to slow down and enjoy the beauty around them. There's a beautiful opposition love story happening between a strong Aries fire energy and a soft Libra air energy."

For other compatibility clues, look at your sun/their moon or vice versa. You could find Aries-charged harmony between these luminaries. If you look further into the chart, you can see where your Mars/their Venus are placed or vice versa. If both placements are in Aries, you may see sparks flying.

Last thing to know if you've got a crush on an Aries: "This is the sign of the one-night-stand, in-the-moment romance," says Aganza.

Ideal Aries friends are Aquarius, Sagittarius and Scorpio, says Campbell. "Aquarius and Aries together feel like a late-night summer party. You know there's fun in store when these two are together. There's no pressure to be anyone but themselves when they're together."

Campbell also notes this is an intellectually stimulating friendship: "Aquarius and Aries would have every conversation under the sun, brainstorming nonstop."

 The other zodiac signs that align for optimal Aries compatibility are focused on fiery adventure and the ruling planet Mars.

 "Sagittarius and Aries are both down for an adventure," says Campbell. "These two come up with the most fun plans, are unapologetic about everything, and with the same element of fire, their common goal is to live it up!"

Lastly, the second zodiac sign ruled by the planet Mars is Scorpio, making a Scorpio-Aries pairing more harmonious than you might see on the surface. "Because these two signs have the same planetary rulership of Mars (in traditional astrology), Scorpio would be an emotionally supportive friend for Aries, and Aries can pull Scorpio out of their shell," says Campbell. Therefore, "Aries would feel emotionally safe with a Scorpio, and Scorpio can keep up with Aries' intense emotions because they have the same kind of emotional intensity."

While you may not always have access to your co-worker's entire natal chart, you may be able to use this tool when forming business partnerships. If you're creating a business alliance with someone, Campbell suggests pulling up the birth chart to check the midheaven point (the top of the wheel) which is the area of career in astrology.

"I would look at the midheaven instead of the sun sign, because the midheaven is located in the 10th house of career," she says. If you have Aries in this area, it is likely you have a Cancer or Leo ascendant or rising (Leo compatibility with Aries is very strong). In other words, if you're a Cancer or Leo rising, you may "show up" as an Aries in the workplace.

Aries compatibility — with the midheaven or sun sign — points to two Mercury-ruled signs, according to Campbell.

"One of the most compatible signs for Aries in the workplace would be Gemini," she says. "Gemini is able to keep up with Aries' high energy, and they understand how to take Aries' ideas and adapt them to fit society's needs."

The planet Mercury, which governs thought and communication, also rules over Virgo. While Aries and Virgo compatibility may seem unlikely on the surface, Campbell says these two make excellent colleagues, "because Virgo likes to be of service and is organized, which provides a grounding energy for a high-energy Aries."
