Here's Why Pokemon Types Matter Even More Than Leveling

There have been so many other Pokémon games over the years, but nothing makes you want to catch 'em all quite like the original FireRed. Vladimir Borozenets / Shutterstock

If you have been playing the re-released Fire Red and Leaf Green, you already know that understanding Pokémon types can make or break a battle. Every matchup in the Pokémon games hinges on a hidden math problem within the type chart.

Learn it, and your attacks deal super effective damage. Ignore it, and your team gets swept.

Across generations—from Generation I to modern spin-off games—types determine how much power a move carries, what weaknesses a defending Pokémon has and whether you deal normal damage, less damage, super effective damage or zero damage. Here is your quick, battle ready guide.

1. Normal Type

Normal type Pokémon deal regular damage to most different types, but they are not super effective against anything. Fighting types are strong against Normal, while Ghost type Pokémon are immune to Normal attacks.

Example: A Normal attack will deal neutral damage to Water type Pokémon but zero damage to Ghost. Normal types are weak to Fighting and have few resistances, so defense often relies on stats rather than typing.
