Self-Portrait by Vincent Van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh's 1889 Self-Portrait is one of at least 40 self-portraits van Gogh painted over the course of his
career. To render his own image, Vincent faced the challenge of
confronting his own identity and emotional condition, and he subjected
himself to uncompromising scrutiny. In one of his last attempts to
express his own image through his art, Vincent van Gogh employs a vigorous brush
stroke and a nearly monochrome palette for his jacket as well as the
background, creating in this Self-Portrait an emotionally charged atmosphere from which he
warily gazes back at the viewer.
