NASCAR has come a long way. What began as a rag-tag bunch of racers battling at dusty dirt tracks for small audiences and little prize money has since grown into a dazzling national spectacle, becoming America's favorite form of motorsports along the way.
Though NASCAR's first sanctioned races featured prewar-vintage Modified coupes -- with hopped-up engines, stiffened suspensions, and lightened bodies -- the Strictly Stock division that debuted in 1949 quickly became the main attraction and eventually evolved into today's NASCAR NEXTEL Cup series.
