Crossed-leg Slave by Michelangelo
Michelangelo's Crossed-leg Slave (1520-30) and the three other captives shown on the following pages were intended for the 1532 version of the tomb of Pope Julius II.
It is believed that one of the more disagreeable ruling descendants of
Julius II, Francesco Maria della Rovere, the Duke of Urbino, passed
through Florence twice during this period and used his power to
pressure the artist to complete the tomb.
