How to Draw People

Learning how to draw can be fun! Believe it or not, it’s actually a lot easier than you might expect. One of the secrets of drawing is that any object can be broken down into its smaller parts. The easy, step-by-step instructions on the following pages can turn you into an artist. Soon you’ll know how to draw all kinds of people wearing different kinds of clothing.

To begin drawing people, you’ll need a pencil, pencil sharpener, an eraser, a felt-tip pen, and paper. On each page in this article, the first drawing will be of the person you will be working on. Examine the person and their clothing carefully before proceeding to the first step.

Learn how to draw this little girl in a fairy costume along with lots of other people in this article.
Learn how to draw this little girl in a fairy costume and lots of other people in this article.

The instructions in the following pages will always start with a few basic shapes, such as ovals, rectangles, and triangles. Draw the full shape, even if some of it will not be seen in the final drawing. The red lines in each illustration show exactly what to draw in that step, while the lines drawn in previous steps are shown in black.

After all the steps are complete, use a felt-tip pen to go over the pencil lines. Ink only the lines you want to keep in the drawing. Let the ink dry, then erase the extra pencil lines. Congratulations! You know how to draw people.

After you've finished a drawing, feel free to add color using crayons, colored pencils, or markers. If you’re feeling ambitious, you can even try watercolors or chalk. Start by adding the main color, gently adding darker colors to areas that would be in shadows or less light (generally toward the bottom or underneath some shapes). This is called shading.

After shading is complete, add lighter colors where more light would be (where the sunlight would naturally hit). This is called highlighting. Shading and highlighting help the drawing look more realistic.

Once you fill in all the colors and are pleased with the person you've drawn, you’re finished. Way to go!

In this article you’ll learn how to draw all kinds of people from a little girl in a fairy costume to a rock star. Here is a preview:

In this section, we'll show you how to draw the little girl with a picnic basket above. Either draw the girl freehand while looking at your computer monitor or print out this page to get a closer look at each step.

Follow the red lines in each illustrations to learn exactly what to draw in that step. The lines drawn in previous steps are shown in black. Here, we'll show you an illustration of each step and then give you a description of how to draw it.

To draw a little girl with a picnic basket, start by making the basic shapes for head, body, and basket.

Step 1: Sketch an oval for the head. Divide the oval into left and right halves with a vertical line to determine the center of the face. Separate the oval into upper and lower halves with a horizontal line to show the position of the tops of the eyes.

Sketch a horizontal line for the hairline about one-sixth of the way down from the top of the oval. Divide the area below that into three equal parts. The first line below the hairline is for the eyebrows, and the next line shows the location of the tip of the nose. The ears lie between the eyebrows and the nose.

Divide the area below the nose into three more equal parts. The line below the nose is for the mouth opening, and the next line is for the lower lip.

Draw a curved line under the head to show the shape of the neck and backbone. Use rectangles for the chest and hip areas. Form the arms and legs with curved tube shapes. Sketch oval shapes for the shoulders.

Draw a circle for the hand area and two small circles for the kneecaps. Use wedge shapes for the feet. Draw a rectangle to form the picnic basket under and to the left of the thighs.

Add details to the body and clothes to draw a little girl with a picnic basket.

Step 2: Draw two small ovals to shape the ears. Use rounded lines to form the hairline and a U-shaped figure for the jaw. Shape the neck and shoulders with curved lines. Extend the curved lines for the arms and hands. Block the hat with long curved lines. Draw more curved lines to shape the clothes.

To continue to draw a little gril with a picnic basket, add facial features and more details.

Step 3: Use short curved lines to draw in the eyes and eyebrows. Form the nose with short straight lines and shape the mouth with full lips as shown here. Use straight lines for the collar and the folds in the clothes.

Draw a bow with curved lines. Use two long straight lines to draw the handle of the basket; connect the two lines with a short curve. Use three odd-shaped triangles for the cloth that is peeking out of the picnic basket.

Draw a curved line to add a band to the hat. Start shaping the fingers with small banana-shaped figures. Smooth out the shoes with long rounded lines.

Refine features and add details to clothing and basket as you draw a little girl with a picnic basket.

Step 4: Add squiggles to the clothes to show wrinkles and folds. Extend curved shapes from the lower left of the hat for the scarf. Add several long wavy lines for the hair. Form the sandals with straight lines and triangles.

Draw squares all over the basket. Do the same with the cloth peeking out of the basket, but remember to follow its shape. Use blackened ovals to draw in the eyes.

Finish the drawing of a little girl with a picnic basket by adding subtle flourishes.

Step 5: Draw thick straight lines on the hat, chin, collar, bow, hands, and feet for shading. Add two small horizontal lines to every other square in the basket; fill in the remaining squares with two short vertical lines. Blacken in every other square in the cloth. Use many straight short lines to add the weave to the hat as shown.

That's it! Don't worry if you don't get it perfect the first time -- just keep practicing until you're happy with the result. See the next section to learn to draw another little girl, this time in a fairy costume.

Sketch basic shapes for the head and body as you begin to draw a man in a bomber jacket.

Step 1: Sketch an oval for the head. Divide the oval into uneven left and right halves with a vertical line to determine the center of the face.

Add a line between the two rectangles for the waist. Form the arms with curved tube shapes. Use ovals to shape the shoulders. Draw odd-shaped rectangles for the hands. Sketch odd-shaped U-figures for the legs.

Establish the hairline, jawline, and jacket shape as you continue to draw a man in a bomber jacket.

Step 2: Shape the hairline with a slightly curved line at the top of the head and two curved lines at each side as shown. Draw the ears with oval shapes. Establish the jawline with a U-shaped figure. Extend long curved lines from the jawline to shape the shoulders and arms. Use two slightly curved lines for the sides of the jacket. Sketch straight lines to shape the slacks.

Add sunglasses, belt, collar, and wrinkles as you continue to draw a man in a bomber jacket.

Step 3: Use squiggles to shape the hair. Draw two ovals over the eyes and connect them to form the sunglasses. Use odd-shaped triangles to shape the collar of the jacket and the collar of the shirt. Extend a line from the collar of the shirt to the waist to show the opening.

Add another straight horizontal line below the waist to form the belt. Use E-shapes to draw the fingers. Add a few straight lines in the jacket and slacks to show wrinkles.

Continue to draw a man in a bomber jacket by adding details, including pockets, to the jacket.

Step 4: Draw in a short straight line from the glasses to the left ear. Use triangles to shape the jacket and shirt collars. Add short lines beneath the shoulders and on the right side of the jacket opening for seams.

Sketch many straight and curved lines to the sleeves, slacks, and shirt to establish wrinkles. Use rectangles to draw pockets for the jacket and slacks. Draw a small oval and a small rectangle on the belt to shape the buckle. Use three straight lines to show the zipper area.

Finish drawing a man in a bomber jacket by adding subtle details and shading.

Step 5: Add hair with curly lines. Shade in the lenses of the sunglasses. Draw in round buttons on the shirt. Show shading in the jacket with thick black lines as shown. Add many squiggles to the jacket to show wrinkles. Outline the pockets on the jacket to give them finishing touches. Add ribbing to the bottom of the jacket and the sleeves with short straight lines.

You did it! The man in the bomber jacket is the very picture of casual cool. But if you're looking for something a little less laid back, see the next section to learn how to draw a rock star.
