Old pro Lee Petty was a dominant force in 1958 NASCAR Grand National competition, leading the points standings after all but the first race of the season.
The Oldsmobile-driving Petty won seven of his 50 starts and finished 644 points ahead of runner-up Buck Baker. Petty finished out of the top 10 in only six races and held a comfortable margin in the points race nearly the entire season.
Rex White won the season opener at Fayetteville, N.C., to take an early lead in the points standings. Petty took the lead for keeps with a sixth-place finish at Daytona. White didn't make a concerted run at the title, though, competing in only 22 of the 51 races on the schedule.
Fireball Roberts drove in only 10 races, but he won six times and finished 11th in the final points standings. Roberts was also the leading money winner on the tour, pocketing $32,218.20 in the 10 events in which he competed. The following chart
