Buck Baker assumed command of the 1957 points race in mid May and easily won his second straight NASCAR Grand National championship. Baker finished 760 points ahead of Marvin Panch, who led the points standings for the first 16 races.
Baker was consistently excellent throughout the season. He began the year with 26 consecutive top-10 finishes and finished the campaign with 38 top-10 efforts in 40 starts. The veteran from Charlotte, N.C., won 10 races along the way in his Chevrolet.
Panch won six races in 42 starts during his first full NASCAR Grand National season, including the opening two events. He led the points standings until the May 19 race at Martinsville, when Baker took the points lead with a victory.
Two-time winner Speedy Thompson wound up third in the points race, followed by Lee Petty and Jack Smith, who both won four events. The following chart
