The battle for the 1952 championship came down to the final event of the season at West Palm Beach. Tim Flock, who took the points lead from Herb Thomas at Langhorne in September, clinched the title by simply starting the 100-miler. Flock smacked the wall and flipped down the front chute in the West Palm Beach finale, but he had accumulated enough points to seal the championship.
"I think I'm the only guy who ever won a championship on his head," cracked Flock afterward.
Thomas, who had taken the points lead at Darlington, only held it for two races before Flock was back in front. The margin at the end of the season was 106 points.
Flock and Thomas both won eight races during the 34-race campaign. Lee Petty, Fonty Flock, and Dick Rathmann, all multiple race winners, filled out the top five in the final NASCAR Grand National points standings. The following chart
