1949 NASCAR Strictly Stock Champion Red Byron
|
Red Byron won his second straight NASCAR title and became the first champion of the new Strictly Stock late-model tour on the strength of a pair of wins during the abbreviated eight-race campaign. Byron finished 117.5 points in front of runner-up Lee Petty, who won once.
Byron took the lead in the points standings after his victory at Daytona Beach, the second Strictly Stock race of the inaugural season. His second victory at Martinsville in September locked up the championship.
Byron drove Oldsmobiles for Raymond Parks during the campaign. Chief mechanic Red Vogt kept the cars in top running order all season. Byron only finished out of the top 10 in two of his six starts.
Two-time winner Bob Flock came in third in points with Bill Blair and Fonty Flock rounding out the top five. The following chart compiles the complete standings for 1949.
