Byron won 11 races during the 1948 campaign, including four in a row in April and May. Flock finished first in 15 races, including six wins in the final two months.
Byron and Flock swapped the points lead five times during the season. Byron snared the lead for keeps after winning the Oct. 17 race at North Wilkesboro.
Young Tim Flock wound up third in the points standings, followed by seven-time winner Curtis Turner and two-race winner Buddy Shuman. Bob Flock claimed five wins, but only managed to finish seventh in the final points standings. The following chart compiles the complete standings for 1948.
